Prior’s Field Students attend Science AIM Conference.

50 Fourth Form students attended a GCSE Science AIM Conference at the Camden Centre in Central London, on Tuesday. Mr Jones reports: ‘They were treated to talks from some of Britain’s top scientists who are also some of the country’s most inspiring speakers. The girls particularly enjoyed the talks by Lord Robert Winston – Britain’s best known biologist, who discussed his work at the forefront of the study of fertility, showing its relevance to some of the issues raised in GCSE Biology – and Professor Jim Al-Khalili, Professor of Physics at the University of Surrey, who also has a chair in the Public Engagement of Science. Professor Al-Khalili’s BBC Radio 4 series, ‘The Life Scientific’, is now in its third series, and he regularly presents science programmes on BBC TV. He discussed his exciting work in cosmology and its relevance to GCSE Physics. Dr Tom Monie, of Cambridge University, is one of the world’s leading researchers studying the immune response. His discovery that cat allergens activate the immune system received global media attention. Dr Monie discussed Protein and Enzymes, emphasizing the role of Chemistry in Biological Sciences.
