Bonjour, buenos días, bore da, moi moi – French, Spanish, Welsh and Finnish were just some of the languages in which teachers were encouraged by the Modern Foreign Languages Department to greet their classes, to mark European Day of Languages. Activities extended throughout the week, with a Languages Accessories Day on Wednesday – with pupils and staff sporting everything from berets and strings of garlic to full Spanish dress – and, at different lunchtimes, the Catering team offering wonderful French and Spanish fare. A Languages Day assembly reminded students of the 4 main reasons to learn a foreign language: it increases the size of your brain; helps you with other subjects; helps you find love and helps you to find a good job! Girls in the Second Form performed a wonderful and lively rendition of ‘la Bamba’, complete with maracas and ponchos.
Mrs Furey reports, ‘As part of this week’s Languages focus, Second Form pupils had a great time in their French lesson today enacting the story of d’Artagnan and ‘les trois mousquetaires’. Our external speaker was lively, enthusiastic and all girls got involved, showing off their wonderful French pronunciation. All in all, an eventful day but filled with fun, surprises and laughter!’
Lower Sixth Food and Nutrition students made fougasse in honour of languages week – Head of Department, Mrs Teasdale capturing the moment on camera.
