EAL support is offered to all girls for whom English is an additional language. All these girls will be re-assessed on arrival, and if they are considered to need English language tuition it will be a requirement that they follow an appropriate course to ensure that they receive any help and guidance they may need.
Once assessed, girls are taught in small groups of 2 - 8 but individual lessons can also be arranged. Lessons for girls in years 7 - 11 take place during French or Spanish classes as it is usual for girls to be studying just one modern foreign language in addition to English. Years 7, 8 and 9 have 3 - 4 lessons per week; years 10 and 11 have 4 - 5 lessons per week. Any girl who is able to study French, Spanish or both may do so. EAL lessons will then be arranged accordingly. It is also the case that girls joining Prior's Field from overseas may have lessons in their own language, which the school can arrange.
Sixth form students' lessons are arranged in study periods. Girls who have attained grade A - C in IGCSE (International GCSE English as a Second Language) normally have 2 lessons per week. New girls generally have 6 - 7 lessons per week. Lessons are 30 minutes long.
Various examinations are taken, depending on ability and requirements. Some girls will take GCSE English Language and / or Literature. IGCSE (International GCSE English as a Second Language) may be taken as an alternative to GCSE English Language.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) courses are studied in the sixth form. In addition to the IELTS course, we are now offering a Business English Course. This can be taken alongside the IELTS programme or afterwards. The course leads to the Cambridge Business English Certificates (BEC). These are awarded at 3 levels; Preliminary, Vantage and Higher.
The Cambridge PET, FCE, CAE and CPE are also available and can be taken at any stage dependent on ability. GCSE, IGCSE and / or IELTS are usually required for university entrance.
EAL lessons are charged in arrears on the termly account. Charges are reviewed annually in June. Present rates are:
Individual lesson £25.00
Group lesson (2 − 4 pupils) £17.00
(5 - 8 pupils) £12.50
Girls are charged for lessons they do not attend unless they are on a School trip or they are taking examinations. One term's notice is required for withdrawal from EAL classes.
