Curriculum Overview

Prior’s Field offers a broad education which goes beyond the National Curriculum: we place a strong emphasis on independent learning, creativity and problem solving. In addition to traditional core subjects (English, Maths and Sciences, French, Spanish, History, Geography, RS, Design Technology, Food Technology, Textiles, Art, Music, Drama, PE, IT, PSHE) girls also follow courses in philosophy, debating, touch typing, study skills and library research skills and Japanese. Supporting and extending the curriculum are individual music lessons, LAMDA and sports coaching.

Most girls will take 9 GCSEs, although by following the separate sciences course (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) it is possible to take 10. There are compulsory core subjects: English, English Literature, Mathematics, Science and Additional Science (certificated as two GCSEs) and a modern foreign language – French or Spanish. In addition, girls can choose up to three other options including History, Geography, RS, Art, Food Technology, Textiles, Music, Drama, Design Technology, and PE. We realise the importance of getting the GCSE years right – they are the first major step on the road to a busy and successful career. In addition to her tutor each girl is assigned an individual staff mentor in the run up to GCSE exams who will provide practical advice and oversee her revision period.

In the Sixth Form we currently offer 23 subjects taught in small tutorial groups – a perfect preparation for university life. At both A Level and GCSE we tailor our option blocks to fit in with students‘ wishes, which means that girls will usually be able to study their first choice subject combinations.
