In the PE and Games Department, we fully support the Prior’s Field ethos by providing an all round education through our sport and physical activity programme. This allows each individual student to develop her talents to the best of her ability. By providing a wide range of sporting opportunities through the curriculum, clubs, teams, sports tours and trips we hope that each student will develop a sporting interest that will encourage her to adopt a fit and healthy lifestyle and a positive attitude towards lifelong physical activity.
To support our students’ different sporting needs we have built links with the local community which provide opportunities for developing performance and leadership skills through the Sports Leadership Awards, by receiving specialist coaching via local sports clubs, and being put forward for trials to represent the district or county. We also run a programme of Taster Sessions where girls receive expert coaching from a specialist in a sport where the girls may not previously have the had the opportunity to try before. Recent taster sessions have included golf, handball, football, table tennis, hip-hop and street dance.
All girls in the First to Fifth Form receive three hours of sport in curriculum lessons each week with the 6th Form receiving one hour.
In the First, Second and Third Form (Lower School), the girls follow a more traditional Games programme with two hours of hockey and netball, alternating each week. We run both sports concurrently to maximise skill development and opportunities for fixtures. The third hour focuses on their physical education where girls develop their gymnastics, dance, cross-country running, swimming and fitness skills.
In the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Form (Upper School and Sixth Form) the range of sports on offer to the girls increases to give them a wide variety. This to ensure they find their sporting niche. Activities include basketball, volleyball, badminton, use of fitness suite, aerobics and exercise to music, Zumba and yoga. This is alongisde the programme of competitive sports for team players.
In the Summer Term all students receive high quality teaching in rounders, tennis and athletics.
In all lessons, students learn about goal-setting and the importance of tactics and strategies to help them in the pursuit of excellence. These skills are essential and critical skills in the workplace, along with god communication skills, leadership, sportsmanship and team work. To help develop these skills we encourage all our students to be involved in some form of extra physical activity for enjoyment be it sports team practices or a recreational club.
At Prior’s Field there are a wide range of competitive sports available to all girls. Throughout the year we run nearly 70 teams which play regular fixtures against other schools. Our main sports in the Autumn and Spring terms are hockey, netball, cross country, swimming, gymnastics and biathlon while in the Summer term our major sports are rounders, tennis and athletics.
We aim to strike a balance between excellence in performance and mass participation with our sports teams. A large number of teams run in our core sports to allow as many girls as possible to play competitively. There are regular C, D and E team fixtures.
Girls take part in weekly age group training sessions in all competitive sports where they receive high quality, specialist coaching from our excellent PE teachers and external coaching staff.
We are proud of the successes of our different sports teams and individuals at local, county and national level. Each year we celebrate achievement, commitment and participation at our annual Sports Dinner. In recent years students have represented the county and beyond in hockey, netball, tennis, athletics, cross-country, sailing, swimming, horse riding, skiing, golf, cricket, gymnastics, ice skating, and kayaking.
All fixtures can be found on the school calendar.
