Co-Curricular Calling Friday 2 March
In the penultimate week of the current series of Careers Talks, we welcomed Nick Stylianou, a senior Producer for Sky News. Nick’s talk was incredibly informative and interesting as he gave invaluable advice about entering the journalism profession. He encouraged those aspiring to be a journalist to be persistent, tenacious, and dedicated; while inspiring the girls with his fascinating and remarkable experiences covering stories of global interest such as Grenfell Tower and London terror attacks.
Checking in on Chess – Round Four
Last week the Chess Club completed round four of the UK Schools Chess Challenge. Laboratory One was a hive of activity as ten chess games took place simultaneously, most of which were very intense and closely fought. The leader is Third Former Emilia C who has twelve points after winning all four of her games, she had an amazing escape from a completely lost position with a brilliantly resourceful trick which resulted in a surprise checkmate. First Formers Louise and Maddie J, and Fourth Former Carlota are in joint second place with ten points after three wins and one loss each. There are three rounds still to go before we crown the new school champion. The trophy will be presented in Assembly on Friday 23 March. Girls who finish near the top of the standings will be invited to go forward to the interschool Megafinals in April/ May.
Reaching The Summit
Mr Starnes reports ‘First and Second Form Climbing Club girls visited Surrey Sports Park last Friday, for indoor climbing and bouldering. They have been learning the necessary knots and safety skills in our weekly sessions, and today was a chance for them to put this into practice climbing at a new venue.’
Guildford Maths Challenge at Charterhouse
Mrs Rusholme reports ‘Prior’s Field sent a team of our twelve top mathematicians to compete in the Guildford Schools Mathematics Competition held at Charterhouse. They completed four challenges – the area of tangrams, estimating the number of balls on various shapes, a mathematical puzzle relay race and finding the value of symbols in a grid. They worked together brilliantly as teams to correctly solve many of the puzzles.’
Girls Night In
The First Form enjoyed their movie night social in the Sixth form loft on Monday evening. With their onesies and blankets, they snuggled down to watch Paddington and then headed downstairs to the Sixth Form common room to have their pizza and ice-cream. Acting Head of First Form, Mrs Baines, reports ‘A fun and relaxed evening was had by all.’
First Form PHSEE
The First Formers continue their PHSEE trips to visit the residents of local Nursing Homes. This week eleven of the girls ventured out to talk to the residents of Eastbury Manor Nursing Homes in Compton.
